What is calories in versus calories out?

Calorie in and calorie out

The success of fat loss through diet and exercise programs is usually attributed to the value of calories that you consume (calories in) versus the number of calories that you expel (calories out). The general consensus is that the calories in need to be less than the calories out – at which point your body will be tapping into the fat cells to obtain energy and hence reduce the size of the fat cell = fat loss = weight loss.

Why is nutrient density important?

This concept is valid however there is finally increasing focus on the value and type of calories that are taken in.  Today whilst looking for something to eat to curb my appetite I found this (pictured) coffee flavoured meal replacement sachet. Add water – and it  will give a sum calorie value of 200 calories. At the same time I assessed the ingredients – first milk solids, the second being fructose (a highly inflammatory type of sugar that is not as easily absorbed and is more easily stored in the liver) and then thickeners. As a single meal replacement it would fill your belly for a small amount of time, however there would also be an insulin response (your body would recognise an increase in the sugar level in your blood and therefore it would release insulin to level this blood sugar level).  And then I compared this to the stalk of broccoli  – which has  about 100 calories for the full head.  So rather than filling up on the easy meal replacement shake – the option would be to eat 2x heads of broccoli for the same caloric value. The broccoli not only would fill your empty belly for 2 meals, due to the bulk, the advantages of choosing this healthy option are increased fibre and natural vitamins and minerals that you take into your body. There would be a slight insulin response upon eating the broccoli however very slight compared to drinking the packet meal replacement.  This was just simple exercise in viewing the current promotion of diet shakes and meal replacement programs that we constantly see in our industry, and a very easy to understand healthy comparison.

The verdict

At Beautiful Body Clinics – Fat Freezing Specialists we are constantly discussing the various types of diets that are in the market and are trending at the time. We are not against meal replacement programs however a complete and careful assessment of the ingredients is needed because unfortunately marketing can trick us into believing we are eating something that is good for us – when it is in fact not. This packet is really just a dehydrated milkshake with added thickeners to delay the digestion and hence the feeling of fullness. Compare this to a cup of milk which would also have 100 calories (low fat)  and 150 calories (full fat). Still less than the packet meal replacement and minus the added ingredients.

As we specialise in fat freezing (or cryolipolysis)  we are constantly hearing of various diet and meal replacement programs from our clients – most of whom have failed once again to lose weight long term using these plans.  Usually they have tried many many variations of programs to lose weight, to no avail. When simple things like the ingredients and the caloric value of this meal replacement is assessed it is no wonder there  is no real weight loss nor behavioural changes.

The benefits of fat freezing Melbourne rely on the fact that the fat cells that we target during treatment are damaged beyond repair and they are then eliminated from your body. Rather than the long and slow reduction of the fat cell size through calorie deficit (calories in). The deficit via reduced calories results in the fat cell remaining under your skin waiting to be filled up again when your calorie intake exceeds your output. Rather like a rubber balloon sitting and waiting for it to be filled up again. Fat freezing removes these fat cells permanently, but the damage that the cooler temperatures do to the cells during fat freezing treatment. This therefore creates a different body shape.
